so why are these secular types opposing it? because elections are good ways of laundering money.

The nice thing about reforming the election process, is that there is no pain for the common man - only for crooked politicians. Therefore this type of reform can be implemented quite easily, without suffering any political price. These are exactly the types of reforms that India needs most, and which can produce the "most bang for the buck" - ie. the most benefits with the least political cost.
