Tesla, the alternative energy company created by Elon Musk, is going to build a 'Virtual Power Plant' in South Australia through 50,000 Solar homes:

So this seems like an interesting way to build a resilient, scalable, distributed infrastructure without resorting to big monster power plants or dams.

This is the convergence of two emerging technologies:
(solar + storage) + (micro-grids with connected batteries)
Very promising area with multiple players -- but only Tesla grabs all the headlines.
