India today [1996, when this article was first written] produces around 180 million tons of food grains for a population of around 900 million.
This article is based on a book by the authors entitled Annam Bahu Kurvita: Recollecting the Indian Discipline of Growing and Sharing of Food in Plenty, published by the Centre for Policy Studies, Madras.
Detailed references to the quotations in this article are available there. The statistical information on food availability in this article is based on the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) data for 1990.

India is hungry. For almost two hundred years, the average availability of food grains in India has remained below 200 kg per capita per year, which the British administrators considered to be the minimal requirement for staving off famines. The country, it seems, reached a state of near famine within a few decades of the coming of the British, and we have remained in that state ever since.

The flash floods that ravaged Himachal Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh between 2000 and 2005 were linked to the unannounced releases from rain-swollen Chinese dams and barrages.
India's surface-water storage capacity — an important measure of any nation's ability to deal with drought or seasonal imbalances in water availability — is one of the world's lowest, in per capita terms.
In 1960, India generously reserved more than 80% of the Indus basin waters for its adversary Pakistan under a treaty of indefinite duration.
India's 1996 Ganges water-sharing treaty with Bangladesh guarantees specific cross-border flows in the critical dry season — a new principle in international water relations. This provision means that even if the river's flows were to diminish due to reasons beyond India's control — such as climate change or the planned Chinese damming of a key Ganges tributary, the Arun (Kosi) that contributes significantly to downstream Ganges water levels — India would still be obligated to supply Bangladesh with 34,060 cubic feet of water per second of time (cusecs) on average in the dry season, as stipulated by the treaty.
India must get its act together, both by treating water as a highly strategic resource and by shining an international spotlight on China's unilateralist course. '

Pallava Bagla

NEW DELHI: Is there a mysterious X-factor that makes waters of the river Ganga special?

Nothing has been conclusively found even though many theories have swirled around for a long time. In what seems a final push, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is seeking to finally resolve the mystery. A huge multi- institution effort costing over Rs 150 crore is underway to scientifically resolve the enigma of this so called 'Brahma Dravya'.

J P Nadda, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, has assured all support for this research including financial assistance to further investigate the claim made through various existing research and studies that the waters of Ganga have medicinal properties, which destroy various kinds of bacteria and microbes, in order to use it for holistic human health.

Ganga is undoubtedly one of India's holiest rivers and for eons its waters are known to possess some so called 'magical' properties that ensure that its waters don't spoil even when stored for years. This is often called the self-cleansing property of the river.

Ganga is the lifeline for about 300-400 million people who reside in its basin which is over 2,500 km in length. Yet today the Ganga is one of the most polluted rivers of the world with water pollution levels at places thousands of times the permissible levels. Yet the devout take a dip in the river unmindful of the toxic soup they immerse into.

The second India Ideas Conclave was held last week in Goa across three days from November 15 to November 17. It was organised by the India Foundation. The aim of the conclave was to bring like-minded individuals in one place to nurture the development of an independent Indic intellectual ecosystem.
The key speakers at this year's conclave were the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, Dr David Frawley, commentator and author Tarek Fatah and others.
"The Indian Right lacks talent and is incapable of rigorous scholarship", "The Indian Right equates pamphleteering with scholarship", "Ideologues are not intellectuals", "Whataboutery is the Indian Right's definition of a narrative", "The Indian Right does not have a credible narrative to tell", "The Indian Right is illiberal and fascist"- how often do we hear such allegations and lamentations? Every other day.
And yet precious little has been done to shatter these stereotypes despite the Indian Right not lacking in talent which was evident from the brilliant minds that had congregated in Goa between November 15th and 17th for the second edition of the India Ideas Conclave.

Kharge Shows Congress 'Tolerance' by Threatening Bloodshed

Congress spokesman Mallikarjun Kharge shows his party's tradition of political "tolerance" by threatening "raktpat" (bloodshed) if the govt proceeds with constitutional review:

SnapDeal Feeing Impact from Amir Khan's Statements

People have begun uninstalling Snapdeal's app due to brand spokesman Amir Khan's statements attacking India as "intolerant":

Trump Getting the Modi Treatment From Left-wing Media?

In a sign of their desperation, the Left-wing media bastions are jumping headlong into Godwin's Law and openly calling Donald Trump a fascist, fearful that his soaring poll numbers are making his presidency a shoe-in:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/27/opinion/donald-trumps-police-state.html

This is of course a lot like how India's dominant Left-wing media have treated Narendra Modi. And of course Modi's election to PM immediately burst the bubbles of shrill rhetoric from Left-wing critics that India's streets would be ablaze if he took office, because nothing of the sort happened. The fact that the Left-wing die-hards are now trying to revise history with revisionist somersaults only shows how obsessed they are with shoving their narrative down everyone's throats.

How will Moody's react if Trump is elected president? Will we see them issue some dire economic warning that a Trump presidency could result in domestic unrest and instability, derailing US economic recovery? Will US Fed Chief Janet Yellen start lecturing the Whitehouse on tolerance, prompting Trump to tell her "YOU'RE FIRED!" and will we see prominent "intellectuals" hand back their awards to the Whitehouse?  Who will be the American counterpart to Amir Khan - will it be Sean Penn? Will Michael Moore dust off his filmmaker cap?

To hear the Left-dominated media tell it, trans-nationalism is the only acceptable political position, and any opposition to that - any type of nationalism - is automatically fascism.

Quick notes: Inferior Muslims, Ahmadi slaughter...

  • IS finds Indian Muslims 'inferior': South Asian and African IS fighters have a disproportionately high level of casualties as they are forced to the frontlines as foot soldiers. The six Indians killed so far are Athif Vaseem Mohammad (Telangana), Mohammad Umar Subhan (Karnataka), Maulana Abdul Kadir Sultan Armar (Karnataka), Saheem Farooque Tanki (Maharashtra), Faiz Masood (Karnataka) and Mohammad Sajid alias Bada Sajid (UP).

At times, the 'inferior fighters' are given a vehicle loaded with explosives, asked to go near a destination and call a certain number. They are told the purported individual would come and meet them to explain the mission. However, as soon as the number is dialed, the car explodes due to a pre-set mechanism aimed at destroying a specific target.

  • Why Pakistan persecutes the minority Ahmadi group: "In Pakistan, it is very easy for people who want to settle scores with their enemies to accuse them of blasphemy. They know that there are immediate arrests in blasphemy cases, and sometimes people are killed on the spot."

  • Madhuchandan, a software engineer from US is making farmers richer! "Our agriculture scientists are misleading farmers. Once a group of farmers were advised to set the waste on fire after the sugarcane field was harvested. The fire actually destroys the micro-organisms that are needed to maintain the soil fertility. The biggest drawback of our country is that we have agriculturists who have lot of theoretical knowledge but have no practical wisdom. Our agriculture universities should have experienced farmers instead of experts," points out Madhu.

  • India should master Solar Thermal:  Solar thermal technology only works in hot sunny countries. The price is falling, and its growing capacity to store energy is arousing interest.  The cost of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels is falling much faster but the International Energy Agency expects them both to play a part in an energy revolution which is likely to see solar as the dominant source of electricity globally by 2050.

Paddy Padmanathan of Saudi-owned ACWA Power, which is running the
Moroccan solar-thermal project, said: "Whether you are an engineer or not, any passer-by is simply stunned by it. You have 35 soccer fields of huge parabolic mirrors pointed to the sky which are moveable so they will track the Sun throughout the day."

Video Against Immigration Goes Viral Across Europe

A video highlighting the negative consequences of illegal immigration goes viral across Europe:

Now that France has experienced its own 26-11 attack, Europeans are suddenly re-thinking their attitudes towards immigration and unending accommodation of non-assimilating cultures.

This is something that can help Europeans to understand the problems that India has been grappling with, and the reason why nationalist backlash has been provoked across India. Until now, it's the global Leftist fraternity who have collaborated across the world to reinforce each other's message. We Indians should look at the opportunity for conservatives and nationalists from the various countries across the world to similarly collaborate and collectively oppose the slanted narrative of the global Left.

Trump Ambushed By Loaded Question on Muslims

US presidential candidate Donald Trump is under heavy fire, after being ambushed by a slanted question from a reporter:

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/11/19/how-the-media-smeared-donald-trump-as-a-nazi/

http://www.wsj.com/articles/more-hillary-than-hitler-1448048195

Here is Trump's own clarification and rebuttal

Notice how the reporter basically feeds Trump the line in order to put words in his mouth. The reporter literally asks, "SHOULDN'T WE HAVE databases to track Muslims in this country?"
He doesn't ask "Should we have.." - instead he asks "SHOULDN'T WE HAVE..." (ie. "let's have this") in order to manufacture the controversy. Partisan hatchet-journalism.

Also, read this exposé from Breitbart:

Given that we Indians have dark skin, it would be relatively easy for any of us to approach a white lefty politician and fool him into making certain ethnic-pandering marks that he'd stereotypically expect us to feel delighted about, but which might not go down well with the rest of society.

Swapan Dasgupta

For the past six years since he has been the resident of 10 Downing Street, the British prime minister, David Cameron, has hosted a Diwali party. This year was no different. With his battleaxe minister for employment, Priti Patel, guiding him through a photo-hungry clutch of British Indian guests - mainly those with some links with the Conservative Party -Cameron was an epitome of affable charm, qualities that come to him quite naturally.

In a speech that resonated with his brand of kind, caring, new conservatism, Cameron elaborated on the great success story of British Indians. Yes, he admitted, there were still glass ceilings they had to encounter in many spheres but these too were being negotiated. With their commitment to the values that are quintessentially British, Cameron said he looked forward to the day when the United Kingdom would have a British-Indian prime minister. To cap it all, and amid some vigorous claps, he said he looked forward to welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi the following day both in Downing Street and at Chequers, his official country house.

Modi, it would be fair to say, fascinated him. "I find it hard," he said "to fill up Wembley Town Hall and here you will have Prime Minister Modi speaking to a full house in Wembley Stadium."

Cameron has a reputation for saying and doing the "right thing" to suit the occasion. But this was not the former public relations man in him speaking. Like most Britons, Cameron was genuinely intrigued by Modi's ability to draw large, enthusiastic crowds - even in the UK, where the audience doesn't vote in Indian elections. In addition, Cameron has personally invested in the UK-India relationship - having made three visits to India before an Indian prime minister returned the courtesy. There is, of course, an innocent explanation as to why he waited 18 months before his Air India flight touched down in London: he had been quite wrongly advised that Labour would win the general election and that, under the circumstances, it would be better for him to wait for the new prime minister.

How did Tipu Sultan, currently in the eye of a political storm, get to be known as a great patriot? Perhaps, historians are responsible for reinventing him. Tipu's negative traits were also whitewashed by a favourable representation.

We can thank two bestselling and most influential text books for creating the myth about Tipu being a great patriot, moderniser and do-gooder internationalist who ruled his lands with a firm hand. One was the book for students, written in 1946 by Ramesh Chandra Majumdar, Hemchandra Raychaudhuri, Kalikinkar Datta (An Advanced History of India), the other was the school textbook on history written by Bipan Chandra for the NCERT in 1971 (Modern India).

From: Michel Danino

Dear friends,

Please go through the attached statement, released today in response to two recent statements by groups of historians more or less representing the Leftist School of Indian historiography in India and overseas. The matter is of great importance — it concerns the way in which Indian students learn about India and the image they develop of their country and culture.

We have also placed the statement online as a petition for those who would like to register their support of our statement. If you do, may I request you to kindly spare a few minutes to:

·         Sign the online petition (the procedure is very simple and takes two or three minutes)

·         Forward this email to your networks so as to reach out to as many people as possible and ask them to consider signing the petition.

1. The Western roots of anti Western terror by brahma c 16.11.15 http://chellaney.net/2015/11/16/the-western-roots-of-anti-western-terror/
'It was no different in the late twentieth century. In the 1980s, under President Ronald Reagan, the US (with funding from Saudi Arabia) trained thousands of Islamic extremists to fight against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. The result was Al Qaeda, whose actions ultimately prompted President George W. Bush's invasion of Afghanistan and provided a pretext for invading Iraq. As then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton admitted in 2010, "We trained them, we equipped them, we funded them, including somebody named Osama bin Laden….And it didn't work out so well for us."
And yet, disregarding this lesson, Western powers intervened in Libya to topple Qaddafi, effectively creating a jihadist citadel at Europe's southern doorstep, while opening the way for arms and militants to flow to other countries. It was this fallout that spurred the French counter-terrorist interventions in Mali and the Sahel.'

2. Paris Exposes the Limitations of the West's Approach to Counter Terrorism by ajay lele 18.11.15 http://www.idsa.in/idsacomments/paris-exposes-the-limitations-of-the-wests-approach-to-counter_avlele_181115

My take – Paris is proof of the Law of Karma at work. When will the West learn?

'Just as Mr. Modi seems not to recognise the cross-cutting demography and complex history of India and 'Indians', there is an exclusionary, know-it-all attitude he displays towards India's neighbours. Mr. Modi thought that a rousing speech in the Nepali Parliament and summons to a couple of former Nepal Prime Ministers to his Delhi darbar for private talks were enough for New Delhi to get what it wanted in the Constitution – a 'Hindu Rashtra' in the text of the Constitution and plains-only province(s) in the federal set-up. That was naive.'
