Oil Price Hike - What About the People?

The ruling govt is staunchly defending its decision to impose the sharpest oil price hike in memory on the Indian public. In response to questions on the hike, Mamta Banerjee made the unusual statement that she would not be pulling out of the ruling coalition. This appears to be the work of Hillary's visit with Mamta in W.Bengal.

The ruling Congress-led govt seems to have promised the United States that it will do everything possible to reduce its consumption of Iranian oil. Rolling out an unprecedentedly high oil price hike would be consistent with this goal, as it would certainly make it harder for the common man to afford to consume it.

Given that the ruling politicians have made a nice cosy deal with the United States, to the exclusion of the Indian people and their interests, one wonders what repayment the rulers will receive for their loyalty. Again, since the general public don't seem to be part of this quid pro quo, they obviously won't be the beneficiaries.
