he was an example of a renaissance man, who had an element of the divine in him.

my hypothesis: the 'yuga' in hindu scripture means 1,200 years. because the Lord says 'sambhavami yuge yuge' whenever dharma is in decline.

let us look at history:

2500 years ago, when dharma had declined badly, He reincarnated Himself as the Buddha and Mahavira to reform the faith.

1300 years ago, when the reform itself had deteriorated, He reincarnated Himself as Sri Sankara and the Bhakti Saints such as Manikyavachakar, who rescued the dharma 

100 years ago, when dharma was under attack from the whites, He reincarnated Himself as a galaxy of great saints such as Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, Sri Narayana Guru

thus the Lord returns whenever dharama is in decline.

let us remember the incredible Swami Vivekananda today. his works and those of Sri Aurobindo are brilliantly written in very modern English idiom, and are worth every minute you spend reading them.
