one more mobile platform bites the dust: intel's Meego, which was no life support anyway

sep 2nd, 2011 CE

ever since nokia jumped ship by going to MS win 7 phone, meego has been sort of dying, slowly.

so the wintel duopoly is really withering, eh? about time. coopetition rules.

from the san jose merc news

• Is Intel abandoning MeeGo, its open-source mobile OS? So says a report from Taiwan-based DigiTimes, citing unnamed sources who claim Intel is temporarily suspending support for the struggling operating system and instead will focus on Android- and Windows-based devices. The future of MeeGo, which originated as a joint effort by Nokia and Intel, has been up in the air since Nokia in February announced a huge tie-up with Microsoft’s Windows Phone. (See Quoted: Nokia gets on board with Microsoft — is it the right call?) Since then, Intel has insisted that MeeGo is still a go, but the DigiTimes report today says the chip maker is failing to find interested partners. Intel has told DigiTimes and others that it “remains committed” to Meego.

Once Microsoft releases Windows8 on ARM-based phones and tablets, then then Wintel monopoly will be on its last legs.
