yet more on slick willie's predicament

jan 23rd, 2011

thank you, thank you, siouxsie. your energy in digging up stuff about william dalrymple is most admirable.

(note to self: never get into siouxsie's bad books :-) )

interesting that the fellow is the archetypal no-good second son of the landed gentry: these are the usual suspects who were sent over to india to govern the place. just like most of those untalented fellows, william also landed up in india and became rich and famous! no wonder he appeals to much to the parvenus of JNU and the #roguemedia.

(i must not be unfair. there were some clever -- how shall i put it -- scholarship boys from the middle classes who also arrived in india. they were usually much smarter and actually did something useful, like surveying or noting the agricultural practices or something. these are the guys whose notes were so valuable to dharampal as he chronicled the india of the 1750-1850 period based on original brit writing in the british library. if you do not know of dharampal, i urge you to get the online copies of his absolutely fantastic books and read them. preferably you should go and buy those books, published by other india press, goa, if i remember right.)
