The sentence was stayed by the apex court bench of Justice B Sudarshan Reddy and Justice S Nijjar.
The court also issued notice to the Gujarat government on their petition seeking that their death sentence be quashed. The petitioners sought re-investigation of their case by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Besides the three, the court has also stayed the life imprisonment of one convict and 10-year-imprisonment given to other convict in the same case.

"Ahmedabad: The Supreme Court last week stayed the trial of 64 Indian Mujahideen (IM) members allegedly involved in a series of terror attacks in the country. The accused had pleaded that they would not get a fair trial in Gujarat and that they were being ill-treated in jail. They sought transfer of their trial outside Gujarat. The stay, just three days before their trial was to begin, may delay and possibly derail the trial.
