From Aug. 2009, IITM has started a M. Tech program in Petroleum Engineering. The Dept. of Ocean Engineering is coordinating this program, other participating departments being Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

In order to strengthen the overall program delivery so that the courses in this program have sufficient practical orientation, we have been arranging lectures from Indian industry, mostly from senior professionals from ONGC, as part of every course. We need to pursue this route for this program in the future also as we believe that it enriches the delivery of the program by imparting a variety of practical and professional viewpoints to the students from highly experienced and leading practitioners in the oil and gas industry.

There is a large pool of professionals in oil and gas sector, who are alumni from the IIT system, out there in many parts of the world. What I would request is to make the IIT alumni aware of this program through PAN-IIT channel and offer them a standing invitation from our side to give a seminar or couple of lectures, spanning 2-3 days, in our department for the petroleum engineering students as and when they are in Chennai for a few days. The preferable period will be when the semesters are running, namely, January-April and August-November. This will ensure presence of all students.

For this purpose one can directly contact:
