As if the police is conspiring to accuse the former pastor.
The adjective former, is helpful to remove any impression that church is involved in the crime. It is only a case of a sheep gone astray.
This same rag may find a different way to project the news if police arrested a non-christian, with many references to 'hindu fundamentalists'.
