@Kapidhwaja

while i am all for scientific projects - these space missions are getting way too opaque and irrational. the chandrayaan piece is a case in point. the space program should be made more accountable before more money is thrown on these missions

@Ghostwriter,

A little perspective:

Cost of Chandrayaan-1 : Approx. US $84 million. Though Chandrayaan-1 mission terminated early, it still was able to accomplish 95% of its mission objectives.

Cost of each IPL cricket team: About US $75-112 million. Aren't these teams owned by Indian Industry tycoons & Bollywood stars who have lots of money to throw away(well not throw away, they do get it back from the Indian public)? Also, doesn't a huge sum of money go towards non-Indian players' fees?

Indian Space and Defence labs are seriously under-funded when compared to that of our rivals.

Compared to the great game of cricket where players rub their sweat, saliva and whatnot onto the cricket ball giving it a lovely smell, I would anyday be a very enthusiastic supporter of our Space & Military missions.

True - if all the money Indians spent on Bollywood and cricket were tallied up, it would pay for missions all over the solar system.
At least missions like Chandrayaan show engineers and managers as positive role-models, achieving new heights for young people to aspire to.

ISRO will use GSLV to take a 500kg payload to Mars. I'd like to see our Indian flag dropped onto the Martian surface, since we're taking the trouble to go there. That also helps us to stake a claim for a future share of Martian sources, should the place come up for grabs.

I'm thinking that a balloon mission could be nice, as it could float around aerially surveying the surface. We could look for water, nitrogen, and even Thorium, which is said to be quite abundant in some the Martian sands. The balloon could be painted with the Indian flag.

It would be interesting to see if ISRO comes up with technologies for retrieving minerals from other planets, satellites back to earth after exploration is done.

IMHO, instead of reducing spending we need to invest more.. I hope we can get away from planet earth and develop a Hindu colony on a far away planet someday.. away from all these jehadi, evangelist, atlanticist scum and live happily ever after..
