brahma chellaney on the IAEA safeguards accord

jul 9th, 2008

in essence, india gets to sign the NPT as a non-nuclear weapons state, and to pay for intrusive inspections to boot. oh joy!

in other words, nuclear slavery forever, immutably. precisely why american snake-oil salesmen have been pushing this thing so hard.

india is equated with pakistan and north korea, all rogue non-NPT signatory states. the chinese must be laughing their heads off.

in my personal opinion, nuclear fission is yesterday's story: the future is in limitless solar energy, and at $140/barrel oil, solar is already economically viable -- it just needs subsidies to get the economies of scale going.

and on top of it, india is paying an enormous strategic price for this dubious benefit. if india withdraws from this one-sided agreement, that will likely be considered sufficient grounds for punitive sanctions, not excluding invasions. and all this to generate a maximum of 7% of its energy needs from fission. what about the other 93%?

surely considerations far removed from india's national interest are at play in this charade.

india is being sold a bill of goods.

Really scary being governed by such corrupt and incompetent fools who are willing to barter away national interests. Apart from the noise created by a section of the people, there does not seem to be any action to actively stop this entire charade from going further to its logical conclusion.
